Task 1 – Different Types of Creative Production Briefs

Task 1 – Different Types of Creative Production Briefs

Contractual

Contractual Brief is a legal document, which is created between an employee and a client. The layout of a contractual brief is very easy and clear to read, meaning it allows the client to complete their details without confusion.

The communication in this brief is between the employee and the client and is very important to get across a clear and easy to read message to the client. Time management would be a good skill to have for self development during a contractual brief due to the brief being simple, this means people can learn to stick to the goals or deadlines of the brief. Technical skills may be required in a contractual brief although the brief is simple the task may be extremely complicated or require a certain profession in order to complete so the employee may need certain requirements before starting. Career progression may take place during or after completing the brief because the employee and client may learn new things from what they must do during the brief.

Commission

A commission would lead to a contract for someone in the media industry, to create a product that is specified in a brief. The brief is set by somebody else and can be very loose or very specific.

The communication in this brief is between the employee and the client and is very important to get across a clear and easy to read message to the client because the brief could be hard to understand due to it being loose and not very specific sometimes. Time management would be a good skill to have for self development during a Commisional brief due to the brief being either very loose or very specific, this means people can learn to stick to the goals or deadlines of the brief and try to figure out how much time to invest in the broad scenario. Technical skills may be required in a Commisional brief the task may be extremely complicated or require a certain profession in order to complete so the employee may need certain requirements. Career progression may take place during or after completing the brief because the employee and client may learn new things from what they must do during the brief.

Negotiated

The client or media company may come to a disagreement in the brief which means they must co-operate and find a way around the brief whilst still sticking to the guidelines and producing the same thing as the brief requires them too.

This brief is between the media company and the client and is very important to get across a clear and easy to read message to the client because the brief could be change slightly due to the fact of disagreements or re-arrangements. Time management would be a good skill to have for self development during a Negotiated brief due to the brief changing they may need to account extra time for further additions or alterations of the brief and try to figure out how much time to invest in a constantly changing scenario. Technical skills may be required in a Negotiated brief the task may be extremely complicated or require a certain profession in order to complete so the media company might need to account for this, also, things that require technical skills may be added due to these disagreements in this particular type of brief. Career progression may take place during or after completing the brief because the media company may learn to handle a brief better and have more than 1 person working on it if they didn't already and the client may learn new things from what they must do during the brief.

Tender

"A tender brief is where several prospective contractors provide and estimated cost and a description of how the product may be produced. The proposals are discussed by the commissioner and one of the tenders drawn."

The communication in this brief is between the prospective contractors and the client and is very important to get across a clear and easy to read message to the client because the brief needs to be put across to not one but several contractors meaning every contractor should understand what they need to do. Time management would be a decent skill to have but is really not required as much as other briefs for the contractors, this means the contractors should be able stick to the goals or deadlines of the brief and work out how much time to invest in the broad scenario. Technical skills may be required in a tender brief because the cost and all of description could be difficult to consistently fit towards a brief/scenario that is complex. Career progression would probably not be in place for the contractors whilst writing description and  and client may learn new things from what they must do during the brief.

Formal

A company gives a brief to a client that must then be followed. For instance a company in the games industry could give a brief to a game developer to create the movement systems for a game by a certain time.

The communication in this brief is between the employee and the client and is very important to get across in a clear way to the client because the brief is formal and must be followed. Time management would be a good skill to have for self development during a formal brief for instance being required for production within the media industry for instance, this means people can learn to stick to the goals or deadlines of the brief and try to figure out how much time to invest in the scenario given. Technical skills may be required in a formal brief the task may be extremely complicated or require a certain skill set, this is relevant within the games industry for example, if a developer was given a brief by the company they work for they would need to learn a programming language before starting the brief. A profession may also be needed in order to complete so the employee may need certain requirements. Career progression is more common in this type of brief and is definitely more likely to take place during the brief because the employee will learn from what they have produced/ why the were needed to produce the product they did.

Co-operative

2 or more companies usually do this type of brief, it is a type of collaboration. The 2 companies then work together to create the product that the brief asks them.

The communication in this brief needs to be very specific because it is being pitched to 2 different companies that must then work together. Time management would be key in this brief due to both of the companies needing to work together and understand each others strengths and weaknesses and be able to adapt to a different companies style of work. Technical skills will be required in a co-operative brief because both companies need to cooperatively create a product to work within an industry. A profession may also be needed in order to complete so the companies may need to hire certain requirements. Career progression is less common in this type of brief due to both companies most likely working to briefs in the past.

Informal

An informal brief is essentially not documented and is usually verbal in which the client and company discuss the product they will construct.

The communication in this brief is extremely specific because the employee must be able to understand the client's demands in order to do this type of brief and it is very important to get across in a clear way to the client because the brief is informal yet must still be followed like any other and the verbal requirement only makes this more difficult on the employee. Time management would be a great skill due to self development during an informal brief for instance being required for production. Technical skills may be required in an informal brief because the task may be complicated just like any other brief and/or require a certain skill set. Career progression is similar to the formal brief and is definitely more likely to take place during the brief than at the end of the brief.

Competition

This type of brief is mainly done by development companies within the game industry and it is when they put out their brief to all of the production companies. The reason it is recognized as a competition is due to different production companies competing to complete the brief first.

The communication in this brief is extremely specific so each of the competitors of the brief (the companies) because each of the companies must be able to understand the client's demands equally in order to do this type of brief and it is very important to get across in a clear way to the client because the brief is informal yet must still be followed like any other type of brief although it is harder for the client to get across because there are more companies to explain it too. Time management would be a great skill due to self development during an competition brief for instance being required for production and the companies competing against each other so the speed of the task. Technical skills may be required in an competition brief because the task may be complicated just like other briefs and the people working on it may require some form of profession. Career progression would definitely happen due to time managements and technical skills being key in this assignment and it is less likely for progression after the brief because the task is over so long as the deadline is met.
